The pursuit of a third consecutive World Cup title by the United States Women’s National Team has captured the attention of numerous fans. According to FOX Sports, the team’s opening match against Vietnam on Friday night became one of the most-watched Women’s World Cup Group Stage games on English-language television.
Throughout the night, the match attracted an average of just over 5.2 million viewers, making it the second-most viewed Group Stage game in Women’s World Cup history. The only game with more average viewers was the 2019 USWNT’s encounter against Chile, during which the United States triumphed 3-0, securing their spot in the Round of 16.
At its peak, the match garnered a viewership of 6,552,000 between 10:45 p.m. and 11 p.m. Comparatively, nearly double the number of viewers tuned in on Friday night compared to the equivalent Group Stage telecast in 2019, which saw a 99% increase from the USA-Thailand game four years prior, which had an average of 2.649 million viewers.
In Auckland, New Zealand, the USA claimed a 3-0 victory against Vietnam late on Friday night, with two goals from Sophia Smith and another from captain Lindsay Horan. The USWNT dominated possession, holding the ball 66% of the time, and showcased excellent passing accuracy at 79%, while Vietnam’s pass accuracy was only 49%. The U.S. also outcornered Vietnam, earning nine corners compared to Vietnam’s zero.
Although the scoreboard could have shown a more significant difference in goals, a win is a win, providing a promising start to the tournament. The USWNT, heavily favored to clinch the championship once again, will be back in action on Wednesday for their match against The Netherlands at 9 p.m.
