Vice President JD Vance signaled strong concern following a White House meeting that the U.S. government is “headed into a shutdown.” He blamed Democratic resistance to a clean funding extension as the primary barrier to resolution.
Shortly after leaders from both parties met with President Trump, Vance asserted that Republicans had proposed a short-term spending bill, but Democrats would not “do the right thing.” He expressed hope they would reconsider—but added that without cooperation, a lapse in government operations appeared all but inevitable.
GOP leadership echoed his warning, emphasizing the need to separate policy changes from the urgent task of keeping agencies open. Meanwhile, Democrats countered that certain funding issues—especially healthcare subsidies—must be included in any acceptable deal.
Lawmakers now have until Tuesday night to agree on a continuing resolution, or federal agencies risk partial shutdown starting at midnight.
