A retired Delta Force veteran was violently attacked in broad daylight in New York City while waiting outside a pilates studio for his daughters. The man, Mark Antal, 54, suffered serious head injuries after being struck with a brick by a stranger in what authorities described as an unprovoked assault.
The attacker, identified as 44-year-old James Lawson, reportedly approached Antal and suddenly launched the attack. Despite the blow, Antal managed to defend himself and detain the suspect until police arrived.
Lawson had been previously arrested twice just days before the incident but was released both times under the state’s bail reform laws. Following this assault, he now faces felony assault charges.
Antal’s wife expressed frustration and fear over the repeated release of dangerous individuals, noting that their children—who had recently returned from volunteering in Ukraine—now say they feel safer overseas than on the streets of New York.
The incident has reignited debate over public safety and bail reform, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent repeat offenders from returning to the streets unchecked.
