Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah Concludes Trump Golf Course Investigation without Filing Charges

In a significant development, Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah officially announced on Thursday the closure of a multiyear-long investigation into the Trump Organization’s valuations of a golf club located in New York. Rocah, a Democrat, initiated the investigation in 2021 to probe whether former President Donald Trump and his organization had provided misleading valuations with the intention of minimizing the tax obligations on Trump National Golf Club in Briarcliff Manor.

During a statement to CBS News, Rocah emphasized the importance of independent prosecutors and a justice system that operates free from political influence. She expressed her commitment to treating every subject and organization under investigation with the same level of scrutiny and impartiality. Following a thorough examination, no charges were filed against Trump or his company as a result of the inquiry.

Trump, taking to his recently launched Truth Social platform, shared his reaction to the news, expressing relief that the case had been dropped. He asserted his innocence, questioning when his reputation would be restored and when other “fake” cases against him would be dismissed, alluding to allegations of election interference.

The investigation was led by former assistant U.S. Attorney Elliott Jacobson, who returned from retirement to serve as the special prosecutor for Westchester County. Jacobson concluded his service in November 2022 after volunteering part-time in the district attorney’s office. As part of the investigation, Rocah’s office subpoenaed records from the golf course and the town of Ossining, which oversees the course’s tax assessments.

The Trump Organization had initially valued the golf club at around $1.4 million for tax purposes but later revised the estimate to $6.5 million. In contrast, the town of Ossining had valued the club at over $15 million for several years. A compromise was reached in 2021 through a New York court ruling, reducing the assessment to $9.5 million for that year and granting the company refunds of approximately $875,000 for overcharged back taxes.

Rocah’s announcement coincided with Trump’s recent plea of not guilty to 37 federal charges in a Miami courtroom. The charges stemmed from Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into allegations of Trump’s improper retention of classified records at Mar-a-Lago, including offenses such as willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and false statements. Trump’s legal battles continue as he remains a frontrunner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, competing against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who officially entered the race in late May. Earlier this year, Trump pleaded not guilty to state charges in New York related to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation into alleged falsified business records associated with hush-money payments during the 2016 campaign.

The conclusion of the Westchester County investigation marks a significant development in the ongoing legal challenges surrounding Donald Trump and his business dealings. While Rocah’s decision not to file charges may appease Trump’s supporters, it also raises questions about the wider implications for transparency and accountability within the justice system. The closure of this investigation, coupled with other ongoing legal battles, ensures that Trump’s legal affairs will remain in the public eye, influencing both his political future and the broader discourse on the responsibilities and integrity of those in positions of power.
