Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) has said he would not support a proposal by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to use taxpayer funds to cover thousands of abortions.
The Republican senator has threatened to place Sente holds on civilian and senior military appointments to compel the Defense Department into changing its abortion policy, which would make thousands of abortions lawful for service people and their families.
This proposed policy change is unlawful, bypasses Congress, and exceeds your authority,” Tuberville said. If the department’s abortion policy is changed as planned, he said, “I would put a stop on any future DoD civilian and general/flag officer nominations.”
The “woke policy” that Tuberville calls “irresponsible” ensures that service members have access to abortion regardless of where they are stationed.
The Defense Department aims to finalize its policies by the end of the year. Nine of President Joe Biden’s nominations have been placed on hold, and Tuberville has pledged that they will remain there until the Defense Department reverses its stance on abortion.
In recent years, the average number of abortions performed by the department has been much below twenty… Tuberville said, “that estimate does not include dependents, which your policy also intended to cover, who could request aid in having an abortion.” According to the report, the number of abortions that the Department of Defense pays for may rise by as much as 4,100 years if the policies outlined in your October letter, “Ensuring Access to Reproductive Health Care,” were implemented.
Tuberville said in a tweet that the plan is “not just a disgusting waste of public wealth but also unconstitutional.” Austin will be forced to respond to my questions.
The Department of Defense is considering a plan that would effectively legalize abortion across the board. Still, when asked how much money this shift in policy would cost, they evaded the subject.
Tuberville, speaking for the majority of Americans, deemed abortion “repugnant,” adding that it “is irresponsible to carry through with such a controversial change to department policy without due thought on how this would affect the preparation of the force.”
