Biden has recommended providing Ukraine an extra $2 billion in military help.
On the same day that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy goes to the United States to address Congress in Washington, DC, the Obama administration will ship Patriot missiles to Ukraine for the first time.
According to Axios, President Joe Biden will unveil a $2 billion security aid plan for Ukraine that would include the transfer of Patriot missiles, the country’s most modern air defense system. Zelenskyy has not left Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February. Recently, he traveled to the nation’s capital.
$65 billion in aid has been authorized by Congress, but another $45 billion is being debated.
The president of Ukraine plans to address parliament to thank MPs for their help in repelling a Russian invasion. That the war isn’t over and more help is needed is probably what Zelenskyy contends.
Ukraine stands to earn $45 billion of the anticipated $1.7 trillion budget if the current negotiations over the budget bill are successful. It appears that both Democrats and a sizable number of Republicans are on board with this proposal.
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wholeheartedly supports Ukraine, in contrast to the more cautious Republicans in the House of Representatives.
McConnell (R-Kentucky) has stated that supporting the Ukrainians in their struggle against the Russians is the top military priority for the United States.
California Republican and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy have publicly backed sending help to Ukraine. However, he has also clarified that he does not want to offer the country a “blank check.”
The Republican Party has called for stricter monitoring of U.S. aid programs.
