The White House has made a request to journalists for their assistance in countering the House impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden.
Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the White House, sent a message to the editorial leadership of U.S. news organizations, emphasizing the need for the media to intensify its scrutiny of House Republicans for launching an impeachment inquiry based on what the White House terms as falsehoods.
The message argues that House Republicans have thus far failed to unearth any evidence of wrongdoing by the President. It highlights some remarks made by GOP officials expressing doubts about the impeachment effort.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) formally announced the impeachment inquiry against Biden, asserting that Republicans have uncovered substantial and credible allegations of corruption in President Biden’s conduct.
In a subsequent letter to his colleagues, McCarthy detailed the evidence gathered by GOP investigators over several months, including bank records and testimony. He also announced a “special conference” with committee chairs scheduled for Thursday.
Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) has been entrusted with spearheading the impeachment effort, with support from Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO).
In a joint statement, this trio of Republican leaders proclaimed that House Republicans have uncovered a substantial body of evidence suggesting that President Joe Biden misled the American people regarding his knowledge and involvement in his family’s influence peddling activities.
To combat the GOP-led investigations, the White House has assembled a “war room” comprised of around two dozen lawyers, legislative aides, and communication staff. Congressional Democrats swiftly rallied behind the President following the announcement of the impeachment inquiry.
During a news conference, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) stated unequivocally that “there is not a shred of evidence that President Joe Biden has engaged in wrongdoing.” He also declared that Democrats would stand by President Biden to the end.
Some members of the media appear to be embracing the notion that Republicans lack sufficient evidence to justify an impeachment inquiry. For example, The New York Times mentioned that “Republicans have found no evidence of financial wrongdoing or corruption by the President, but said they have received enough information to warrant further investigation.”
During an exchange with Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA), a reporter raised doubts about the visibility of the evidence uncovered by House GOP members, suggesting that the American people perceive it as political retaliation. Perry, chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, responded, “Because you don’t report on it.”
