Carlee Russell, 25, couldn’t contain her grin as she posed for her mugshot today, but her smile quickly faded when she was hit with charges for faking her own abduction. The Alabama woman is now facing two misdemeanor charges of filing a false report, which could result in up to two years in jail and hefty fines totaling $12,000. However, she was released from jail on a $2,000 bond.
It all started on July 13 when Russell called 911, claiming she had seen a toddler in a diaper on the side of the road while driving home from work in Hoover, Alabama. Shortly after, she called her brother’s girlfriend, sounding terrified, and repeating the same story. Two days later, she reappeared at her parents’ house, sporting a cut lip and an elaborate tale of being abducted by a man with orange hair who held her captive for 48 hours before she managed to escape.
The tale seemed fishy, and the Hoover Police began to investigate. They soon discovered her suspicious Google search history, which included queries about Amber alerts and research on the movie “Taken.” When confronted with the evidence, Russell finally confessed to concocting the entire story.
Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis announced the criminal charges against her, leaving many puzzled as to why she would resort to such an elaborate hoax. The Russell family lives in an $800,000 house and holds steady jobs; her mother is a realtor, and her father is a VP at a bank.
The motive behind her actions remains unclear, but there are rumors that she may have staged the hoax to win back the attention of her recently split boyfriend. Initially worried about her disappearance, the boyfriend distanced himself once her story began to unravel.
Now, aside from facing the legal consequences, there are questions about whether Russell will be required to repay the $100,000 spent on the search for her. As of now, her parents have not commented on her arrest, and she has not provided an explanation for her deceitful actions.
