Virginia Rep. Bob Goodlatte and South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy, the GOP chairmen of the House Judiciary and House Oversight and Government Reform Committees have asked AG Jeff Sessions for information James Comey’s friend Daniel Richman and his handling of the Comey memos.
They also want to know the name of everyone Comey gave a copy to. Richman could be in danger over the investigation himself. he leaked classified memos to the New York Times. People within the FBI said that Richman had free run of the FBI offices during Comey’s tenure as Director of the FBI.
The chairman wants extensive information on Richman including the range of time that he worked for the FBI, any titles he held and if he received any classified memos, which looks like a certainty. Richman became Comey’s attorney after his firing and so at the time of the leaks he had a security clearance from the FBI, so I am assuming he knew full well that he was handing over classified information.
Comey claimed that he released the memos for the express purpose of getting a special prosecutor over the man who fired him and left him butthurt.
Comey gave Richman four memos that he wrote after his meetings and conversations with Trump. Two of the documents contain classified information. Comey redacted classified portions of one of the memos before giving it to Richman. The Justice Department recently determined that another one of the memos contained classified information that Comey did not react.
The Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General is investigating Comey’s handling of the documents.
After Comey was fired by Trump on May 9, 2017, he instructed Richman to share details of one of the memos with The New York Times. Comey has said that his goal was to force the appointment of a special counsel to continue the Russia investigation.
