In a recent decision that has garnered attention, a faction of House Democrats, mainly from the progressive “Squad,” opted not to back a resolution condemning the Oct. 7 assault on Israel by militants associated with Hamas. This move has ignited strong opinions from both sides of the aisle.
Representative Jason Smith, a Republican from Missouri, expressed his profound disappointment on “The Kilmeade Commentary.” He pointed out that these representatives, including Cori Bush from his home state, have taken stances that he finds concerning. For instance, Bush supports police defunding, and Smith notes the high crime rates in her represented area. Smith went on to say, “These views are misguided. The narrative some of them are pushing can be quite misleading. Their leniency towards groups involved in acts of terror against Jewish communities post-Holocaust is deeply unsettling. This raises questions about their suitability for office.”
The resolution, labeled H.R. 771, aims to underline America’s continued alliance with Israel as the nation responds to such attacks. The majority of Congress members rallied behind it, leading to a 412-10 vote in favor, while six abstained.
The list of those opposing the resolution features notable names like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York, Ilhan Omar from Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib from Michigan, Jamaal Bowman from New York, Summer Lee from Pennsylvania, and Cori Bush from Missouri. Joining them were André Carson from Indiana, Al Green from Texas, and Delia Ramirez from Illinois.
Meanwhile, two other “Squad” members, Greg Casar from Texas and Ayanna Pressley from Massachusetts, alongside Joaquin Castro from Texas, Nydia Velázquez from New York, Jesús “Chuy” Garcia from Illinois, and Pramila Jayapal from Washington, chose not to vote.
Surprisingly, one Republican, Rep. Thomas Massie from Kentucky, also did not support the resolution. However, he made it clear that his decision was based on potential escalation worries, not a lack of support for Israel or a disregard for the aggressive actions of Hamas.
