The Democratic Mayoral candidate from Louisville, Kentucky, Craig Greenberg, who was previously the target of an attempted assassin has come out to new networks that the suspect that was apprehended as part of his shooting attempt has officially been bailed out of jail.

As released in comments on Thursday,  Greenberg stated that the release of the would-be assassin was  “nearly impossible to believe,” and criticized the entire criminal justice system for letting the shooter go free. “Our criminal justice system is clearly broken,” exclaimed Greenberg. “It is nearly impossible to believe that someone can attempt murder on Monday and walk out of jail on Wednesday. If someone is struggling with a mental illness and is in custody, they should be evaluated and treated in custody. We must work together to fix this system.”

“Sadly, like others who suffer from a broken system, my team and my family have been traumatized again by this news,” stated Greenberg. He went on, however, to state his optimism for the Louisville Metro Police Department would be able to take steps to properly handle the investigation. “That said, I trust LMPD to carry out this investigation properly so that the individual responsible for trying to kill me will be prosecuted appropriately. Regardless of what leads someone to commit a violent crime, there must be consequences.”

Greenberg called upon the residents of Louisville and all of his supporters to work together in order to “fix this system so it works for everyone and is focused on preventing violent crime from happening.” all the while, Greenberg stated, “I will remain focused on the urgent work to make Louisville safer, reduce senseless gun violence, and combat the root causes of crime. And, I will lead the effort to invest more in mental health resources in all of our neighborhoods and especially in our jails.”

“[The shooter] and his family are hurting. My family and team are hurting. I pray for everyone involved in this alarming incident,” finalized Greenberg.

This past Tuesday, Greenberg was attacked while in his campaign headquarters in what many are calling an assassination attempt. Various local news sources stated at the time of the attack that the shooter calmly walked up to Greenberg’s HQ and was greeted by various staff members, all before pulling a gun and opening fire. No one was injured as a result, but one of the bullets reportedly grazed the mayoral candidate. The shooter has been officially identified as a 21-year-old activist and student of the University of Louisville. The shooter has reportedly also had a history of taking part in extremely radical racial activism and dealing with mental health issues. Officially, the man was charged with attempted murder and a whopping four counts of wanton endangerment. The bail for the would-be assassin was slated to be $100,000 which was posted by the Louisville chapter of Black Lives Matter.
