Yesterday was the first court appearance for the guy accused of planting pipe bombs outside the headquarters of a political party in Washington, D.C. His family members cheered him on as he entered the courthouse.
Formally accused with transporting and placing explosive devices outside the headquarters of both major U.S. political parties on the eve of the January 6 Capitol events, the suspect was taken into custody last week. Although authorities fled the area before to any explosion, court documents claim the devices were viable and might have gone off.
Citing the seriousness of the alleged offenses and the possible harm to the public, the court assessed the allegations throughout the hearing and set bail at $1 million cash or secured bond. Until a preliminary hearing, the defendant is still being held.
A large police presence was necessary to avert chaos after relatives outside the courthouse carried banners declaring the accused’s innocence and repeated family chants. The judge threatened to remove the family from the proceedings unless they maintained decorum.
As prosecutors examine further evidence, such as security film and computer data, they have hinted that they would bring additional accusations. Regarding their client’s filings, defense lawyers have refrained from making any public remarks.
