U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reported that more than 1,000 undocumented immigrants were taken into custody during a 14-day nationwide operation carried out in honor of Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student whose killing last year drew national attention to immigration enforcement and public safety concerns.
The operation focused on locating and arresting non-citizens with criminal histories, including individuals accused or convicted of offenses such as assault, burglary, and other serious crimes. Federal officials said the initiative was designed to prioritize public safety by targeting those considered threats to local communities.
ICE stated that the enforcement effort was conducted across multiple states and involved coordination with other federal and local law enforcement agencies. Many of those arrested are expected to face detention and removal proceedings under existing immigration law.
Agency leaders described the operation as a targeted action intended to uphold the law while honoring victims of violent crime. The arrests come amid continued national debate over immigration policy, enforcement priorities, and cooperation between federal authorities and local jurisdictions.
