Recently, a Russian official issued a threat of nuclear assault against the U.S. for the support they have been giving Ukraine throughout this war, making the claim that a group of four of Russia’s newest intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) could very likely wipe out both the east and west coast of America.
“I will tell you absolutely competently that to destroy the entire the East Coast of the United States, two Sarmat missiles are needed,” exclaimed one member of the Russian parliament, Alexei Zhuravlev, in an interview on the Russian state-owned television.
“And the same goes for the West Coast,” he continued. “Four missiles, and there will be nothing left.”
Zhuravlev also seemed to reference a report from CBS News that went out earlier this year that stated that a single nuclear strike against New York City would create a mushroom cloud that would reach up higher than the tallest building in the city, which made Zhuravlev scoff, stating, “the mushroom [cloud] would be visible from Mexico.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated, this past April, that his military had made many successful new launches of these ICBM, going on to add that the weapon could “reliably ensure Russia’s security in the face of external threats, and will provide food for thought to those who in the heat of frenzied aggressive rhetoric try to threaten our country.”
It was reported by The Washington Post that the RS-28 Sarmat, which has since been labeled the “Satan-2” missile, was created as a replacement for the heavily outdated Soviet-era Voevoda missile previously used by the country. The Satan-2 “is considered Russia’s most powerful ICBM: a super-heavy, thermonuclear-armed intercontinental-range ballistic missile,” claimed the report.
This threat from Zhuravlev comes forth against the U.S. just as the Biden administration has given the Ukrainian defense forces billions of dollars worth of weapons and supplies to be used to throw back the Russian invasion forces currently plaguing the country.
This threat also follows up on a recent announcement from the Biden administration that it will be sending Ukraine the most advanced weapons systems that it has given to the Eastern European country through its first three months of war against Russia.
Democrat President Joe Biden officially made that announcement via an op-ed that was put out by The New York Times on Tuesday evening, stating that the U.S. will be giving an extremely advanced rock system and its munitions to Ukraine “that will enable them to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield in Ukraine.”
“The High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) that the U.S. is sending is a mobile rocket launcher that can strike targets from 40 to over 300 miles away, depending on the type of rocket it is outfitted with,” reads a report from Politico. “The rockets that the administration has decided to send are on the shorter end, reaching up to 48 miles.”
