As part of his urgent $40 billion funding appeal, President Joe Biden is reportedly seeking Congressional approval for a housing initiative aimed at accommodating illegal immigrants at the southern border.
According to reports from Axios, Biden’s proposal entails establishing housing facilities for undocumented immigrants, allowing them the flexibility to come and go as they please. This plan aligns with the Department of Homeland Security’s intention to expedite their processing. If Congress greenlights the funding for this program, officials suggest that the legal process for these individuals could be completed within a span of three weeks.
The administration contends that the housing scheme would enable the government to monitor undocumented immigrants without resorting to detention facilities. Additionally, it would help alleviate the strain on migrant shelters near the border, which have been grappling with overwhelming numbers. The Biden administration ceased the practice of detaining illegal immigrants in 2021, leading Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to adopt alternative methods such as GPS tracking and phone check-ins for those released within the U.S. while seeking asylum.
In accordance with Biden’s proposed initiative, the housing setup would grant the freedom for undocumented immigrants to leave during the day, while requiring them to return to the housing facility for overnight stays. An official from the Department of Homeland Security clarified that this approach should not be construed as family detention.
The President faced criticism from the Left earlier in the year when he contemplated a return to detaining families of illegal immigrants, despite having strongly condemned such a policy during former President Donald Trump’s tenure. This apparent shift occurred as Title 42, a health measure from the Trump era, was phased out. The policy had compelled illegal immigrants to await their asylum claims in Mexico due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under President Biden’s watch, illegal immigration has experienced a surge, prompting calls from both conservative and progressive quarters to address the border crisis. While the Biden administration celebrated a temporary decline in apprehensions of illegal immigrants in June, the numbers spiked by 30% in July, as reported by The Texas Tribune. The June figures, while a record low during Biden’s term, still exceeded the numbers observed under the Trump administration.
In June, U.S. Customs and Border Protection apprehended approximately 100,000 illegal immigrants, a figure that surged to over 130,000 in July. Notably, the Tucson sector in Arizona witnessed the arrest of around 40,000 illegal immigrants in July alone, marking a 15-year record for that sector, according to data from CBP.
Within Biden’s comprehensive $40 billion emergency funding proposal, $4 billion has been allocated to address the border crisis. Remarkably, this allocation is $20 billion less than the amount earmarked for assistance to Ukraine, as highlighted by POLITICO.
