Taliban Fighters Target Civilians During Fight For Control Across Important Region

Quite a few civilians situated throughout the northern sections of Afghanistan have found themselves being illegally arrested, and subsequently tortured, by occupying Taliban forces for allegedly associating with a rival group, as reported to a human rights group in the area.

Human Rights Watch (HRW), a group based out of America, stated that groups of civilians had been swept up in the efforts of the Taliban to fight off attacks against Taliban forces in Afghanistan’s Panjshir province. Citizens have been slammed with accusations of helping the Taliban opposition forces, as reported by the Associated Press.

“Taliban forces have committed summary executions and enforced disappearances of captured fighters and other detainees, which are war crimes,” stated HRW.

The vast majority of the opposition forces standing against the Taliban throughout the Panjshir valley have come from the remainder of Afghanistan’s security forces that were left in the area in the wake of the Taliban’s hostile takeover of the area due to President Joe Biden’s horrendous pullout of the stationed American fighters.

As reported by Patricia Gossman from HRW, due to the opposition throughout the region, the Taliban has started to attack the civilians of the area.

“Taliban forces in Panjshir province have quickly resorted to beating civilians in their response to fighting against the opposition National Resistance Front,” she stated. “The Taliban’s longstanding failure to punish those responsible for serious abuses in their ranks puts more civilians at risk.”

Officials for the Taliban have stated that they will not allow anyone to “disrupt security” in Panjshir, and multiple detainees have stated to HRW that the Taliban fighters have detained, and tortured, almost 80 people while looking for intelligence. They have jailed 10 people for alleged connections to a rival group of the Taliban.

“Taliban forces in Panjshir have imposed collective punishment and disregarded protections to which detainees are entitled,” stated Gossman. “This is just the latest example of Taliban abuses during fighting in the region.”

In August of last year, chaos erupted across the country when the U.S. completed a hasty withdrawal from the country which sparked the collapse of the heavily American supports Afghan government and the rapid mass evacuation of roughly 70,000 Afghan nationals into the U.S.

As of writing, the Biden administration is still taking strides to pull more Afghan refugees into the U.S. NBC stated in a report this past week that, “the U.S. government indirectly pays an airline controlled by the Taliban regime to ferry Afghan refugees out of Kabul.” It is currently not known just how much money is being paid out for the operation by the government.
