During the last week of the election, the Democratic National Committee and a Michigan congressman in a close race sought the assistance of a virulently anti-gay pastor.
Rep. Dan Kildee (D-Michigan) campaigned for re-election against Republican Paul Junge in a district that was more than 50 percent Republican after the 2010 Census redistricting. At the Cathedral of Faith Church on Wednesday, the DNC Black Caucus and the Michigan Democratic Women’s Caucus allegedly conducted a “Flint GOTV Rally” to organize Democratic urban voters. Bishop Christopher E. Martin of Kildee and Representative Haley Stevens of California spoke during the event (D-MI).
In June, Martin showed disdain for other preachers, whom he suspected to be homosexual, and attempted to spread the “spirit of depravity” on tape, causing uproar in the Flint region.
Tonya Burns, a city council member in Flint, helped distribute Martin’s message around the town. In reaction to the Bishop’s church being given a contract for health services, Nayyirah Shariff, a social justice activist, cautioned local officials that lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, and transgender individuals would likely feel uncomfortable attending. Performing a task in a homophobic atmosphere? According to Flint Beat, Shariff stated in June, “That area is not secure.”
The event’s speakers stood behind a podium with the inscription “The seal of the Bishop,” the precise location where Martin had given his anti-gay speech months earlier.
According to NBC 25 News, Kildee celebrated Martin’s promotion to Bishop with him in April of this year. In 2017, Barack Obama presented Martin with the Lifetime Achievement in Community Service award. Martin is the former president of the school board in Flint, and his church operates a preschool and provides counseling services to the community using government money.

Dr. Charles Williams, whom she lauded for being a member of Al Sharpton’s National Action Network. This nephew fought in the sixth for the city of Flint. The redistricting of the district is immaterial in any event. Dan Kildee may receive credit for acquiring government funds. You know, Bishop, that won’t be easy to top. “As Kildee entered the stage, he told the residents of his region, “I have been with you because I am you.”
The Kildee campaign did not reply to a request for comment on Wednesday’s events.
