WI Mayor Faces Investigation After Publicly Removing Voting Drop Box

A district attorney in Wisconsin has launched an investigation into a local mayor after the removal of an absentee ballot drop box from a prominent location sparked concerns about potential violations of election laws. The inquiry follows reports that the mayor, whose name has not been disclosed, ordered the ballot box to be taken down ahead of an upcoming election, leading to accusations of obstructing voters’ access to absentee voting.

The drop box, which had been placed in a central area to facilitate mail-in voting, was suddenly removed, raising alarm among voting rights advocates and local officials. The DA’s office is now looking into whether the mayor’s actions were in compliance with state regulations governing the placement and use of absentee ballot drop boxes.

Critics argue that the removal could have serious implications for voter access, particularly for those relying on absentee voting. “Removing a drop box without a clear and legal reason undermines trust in the electoral process,” said one election law expert. Several community groups have expressed concern that such actions could discourage voter participation, particularly in an election cycle where absentee ballots are expected to play a significant role.

The mayor has defended the decision, claiming that the removal was based on concerns over security and the integrity of the voting process. “We want to ensure that all ballots are handled properly and securely,” the mayor stated, adding that the city had taken steps to provide alternative voting methods for residents.

However, the district attorney’s office is now investigating whether the removal violated state guidelines on absentee voting, which have become a contentious issue in Wisconsin following recent elections. Under state law, absentee ballot drop boxes are allowed in designated locations to increase access to voting, particularly for those unable to vote in person.

As the investigation continues, local officials are working to clarify the rules surrounding the use of drop boxes and ensure that voters are aware of their options. With the upcoming election drawing near, the outcome of the DA’s inquiry could have broader implications for how absentee voting is handled in the state going forward. The decision is expected to garner significant attention as Wisconsin remains a key battleground state in national elections.
